Types of Salons and Their Interior Requirements

By •

Not every salon needs the same kind of space.

A barber shop may only need a few workstations and a wash area, while a full-service unisex salon may need separate spaces for hair, beauty, makeup and treatments. A makeup studio has a completely different lighting requirement, and a premium salon may need more room for private services and customer comfort.

The type of salon you plan to open is therefore one of the first things to decide before working on the interior layout.

Here are some of the common salon formats and the spaces they typically require.

Hair Salon

A hair salon is mainly focused on haircuts, styling, colouring, hair treatments and hair washing.

The basic setup usually revolves around the styling station. You need enough room for the chair, mirror, stylist movement and electrical points, along with a separate shampoo or hair-wash area.

Depending on the size of the salon, you may also need reception, waiting, storage and a product display.

For a small hair salon, getting the spacing between the styling stations right can make a big difference to how comfortable the space feels.

Unisex Salon

A unisex salon caters to both men and women and often combines hair and beauty services under one roof.

A typical layout can include:

  • Hair styling stations
  • Shampoo area
  • Facial or treatment rooms
  • Manicure and pedicure
  • Makeup area
  • Reception and waiting
  • Product display
  • Storage

The challenge here is usually not fitting more services into the plan. It is making sure the different activities don't interfere with each other.

For example, hair dryers and busy styling stations shouldn't create unnecessary disturbance in a quiet facial or treatment area.

Beauty Salon or Beauty Parlour

Beauty salons and beauty parlours generally focus more on personal-care and beauty treatments.

Services can include facials, waxing, skincare, manicure, pedicure and makeup.

The interior therefore tends to have more treatment-oriented spaces than a basic hair salon. Privacy becomes important, particularly for facial and other personal-care services.

Easy-to-clean surfaces, suitable lighting, storage and proper ventilation should also be considered while planning the space.

Ladies Salon

A ladies salon can combine several services in one place, including hair styling, beauty treatments, makeup and nail services.

Depending on the area available, the layout may include:

  • Hair styling stations
  • Shampoo area
  • Beauty room
  • Facial room
  • Makeup area
  • Manicure and pedicure
  • Reception
  • Waiting lounge
  • Product display

Compact ladies salons need particularly careful planning because several services may have to fit into a relatively small shop.

A 300 sq ft salon, for example, cannot simply use the same layout as a 1,500 sq ft salon with everything scaled down. The services and priorities have to be decided first.

Men's Salon

A men's salon generally focuses on haircuts, beard grooming, shaving, facials and other grooming services.

The layout is often centred around grooming stations, mirrors and chairs, with a shampoo or wash area positioned nearby.

For a high-turnover men's salon, circulation between the reception, workstations and wash area becomes important. Storage should also be easy for staff to access without taking up valuable customer space.

Barber Shop

A barber shop is usually more specialised than a full-service men's salon, with the focus on haircuts, shaving and beard grooming.

A compact barber shop can work with a relatively simple setup:

  • Barber chairs
  • Mirrors
  • Workstations
  • Wash area
  • Waiting seats
  • Reception
  • Product display
  • Storage

Because the service range is narrower, the design can concentrate on making each barber station efficient and comfortable.

Nail Salon

A nail salon is built around manicure and pedicure services.

The furniture and equipment are quite different from a conventional hair salon. Manicure tables, pedicure chairs, technician workstations and product storage become the main planning elements.

Ventilation and hygiene also deserve attention, particularly where nail products and treatments are being used.

Good task lighting is another practical requirement because nail technicians work on small, detailed areas.

Makeup Studio

A makeup studio is designed primarily around makeup services rather than hair or general beauty treatments.

The makeup station is the key element here. It needs a suitable mirror, good lighting, seating and enough storage for cosmetics and tools.

If the studio caters to bridal or event makeup, additional space may be required for waiting, changing and movement around the makeup stations.

Lighting is particularly important because the artist needs to see skin tones and makeup colours accurately.

Hair & Beauty Studio

A hair and beauty studio combines selected hair and beauty services in a smaller format.

It can be a practical option when the business wants to offer more than hair services but doesn't have enough space for a large full-service salon.

The layout may combine:

  • Hair styling stations
  • Shampoo area
  • Facial or treatment space
  • Manicure/pedicure
  • Reception
  • Product display

The key is deciding which services are actually worth accommodating within the available area rather than trying to include everything.

Luxury or Premium Salon

A premium salon usually places greater emphasis on the overall customer experience in addition to the services themselves.

The space may include a larger reception and waiting lounge, private treatment rooms, premium styling stations, spa or massage areas, makeup and nail services, and carefully designed product displays.

Materials and lighting also play a larger role in this type of salon. The objective is not simply to make the space look expensive, but to create a consistent experience from the moment the customer enters.

How the Salon Type Changes the Interior Layout

The business model has a direct effect on the space plan.

Salon Type Main Planning Focus
Hair Salon Styling stations, mirrors and shampoo area
Unisex Salon Separate hair and beauty functions with flexible circulation
Beauty Salon Treatment spaces, privacy and beauty stations
Ladies Salon Combination of hair, beauty, makeup and nail services
Men's Salon Grooming stations, wash area and efficient circulation
Barber Shop Compact barber stations and easy staff movement
Nail Salon Manicure, pedicure and technician stations
Makeup Studio Makeup stations, mirrors, lighting and storage
Premium Salon Customer experience, privacy, materials and multiple service zones

This is why we don't start a salon project by selecting furniture or colours. The first question is usually what services the salon needs to provide and how many customers and staff need to use the space at the same time.
